Universiti Malaysia Terengganu has announced a significant research achievement with two of its academics securing an international grant worth RM3.9 million to undertake an ambitious mangrove restoration initiative across multiple Malaysian sites. Associate Professor Dr Behara Satyanarayana from the Institute of Oceanography and Environment and Dr Giovanna Wolswijk from the Faculty of Marine Science and Environment will lead the project, which begins in July 2026 and runs until June 2029.

The funding, provided by the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate under the United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), reflects growing international recognition of Malaysia's role in biodiversity conservation. The three-year project, titled REVIVE: Just Restoration and Equitable Value Chains for Inclusive, Viable Mangrove Ecosystems: The Case of Malaysia, addresses a critical environmental and socioeconomic challenge facing coastal regions across Southeast Asia.

The research will concentrate on four strategically important mangrove areas that represent different ecological and developmental contexts. These include the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Perak, which is one of the largest mangrove reserves in Malaysia and has a long history of sustainable management; Sungai Acheh and Sungai Chenaam in Penang, which face pressures from coastal development; and the Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu, an environmentally sensitive zone that supports significant biodiversity. This geographical diversity will allow researchers to develop restoration models adaptable to various conditions and management scenarios.

The project's central philosophy integrates environmental restoration with economic justice for local communities who depend on mangrove ecosystems for their survival. Rather than implementing top-down conservation measures that may disadvantage coastal dwellers, the REVIVE initiative seeks to create restoration approaches that simultaneously enhance ecological health and expand sustainable livelihood opportunities. This approach acknowledges that conservation success in developing countries often depends on demonstrating tangible benefits to communities whose traditional lands and resources are being protected.

Mangrove forests serve multiple critical functions that extend far beyond their visible boundaries. These coastal forests act as natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion, providing essential protection to settlements and agricultural land. Equally important, mangroves function as significant carbon sinks, storing carbon in their soils and biomass at rates far exceeding those of terrestrial forests. This blue carbon sequestration capacity positions mangrove restoration as a tool for climate change mitigation, aligning with global efforts to address climate change through nature-based solutions.

The research team will undertake comprehensive scientific work across several dimensions. Blue carbon mapping will quantify and track carbon storage potential across different mangrove restoration sites, providing data essential for carbon finance schemes. Ecosystem health assessments will evaluate biodiversity, water quality, and overall ecological function. Habitat restoration measures will address specific degradation issues affecting each site. The project will also investigate solutions to persistent challenges including mangrove loss, sand deposition that threatens forest regeneration, and the long-term viability of mangrove-dependent industries such as aquaculture and timber harvesting.

Community participation stands as a cornerstone of the project's design rather than a peripheral consideration. By engaging local stakeholders as strategic partners throughout all project phases, researchers aim to ensure that restoration efforts reflect community needs and priorities. This participatory approach enhances the likelihood of long-term conservation success, as communities that have shaped restoration strategies are more likely to sustain and protect them beyond the project timeline. Local knowledge about mangrove ecology and sustainable resource use will complement scientific research, creating hybrid knowledge systems more robust than either alone.

The award carries significance for Malaysia's positioning in international environmental research. Throughout Southeast Asia, mangrove forests have been converted to aquaculture ponds, agricultural land, and urban development at alarming rates. Malaysia has experienced significant mangrove loss despite conservation efforts, making restoration increasingly urgent. This research provides an opportunity to develop and test models that could be adapted across the region, potentially influencing mangrove management practices in neighbouring countries facing similar pressures.

Looking forward, the outcomes of this three-year initiative will likely inform policy discussions about coastal zone management, marine protected areas, and climate adaptation strategies at both national and regional levels. By demonstrating how restoration can simultaneously advance environmental and economic objectives, the project challenges false dichotomies between conservation and development that have long hampered effective environmental management in Southeast Asia.
